Skating Made Easy in YEG

Edmonton is a cold city this time of year, therefore it is a great city for outdoor skating in the winter. There are a number of outdoor public spaces that offer free skating, including the lower lawn of the Legislature grounds and many city run outdoor rinks. We’re eager to check out the new Freezeway in Victoria Park (BONUS-they have washrooms, change rooms and a warming trailer!). City of Edmonton Arenas also offer free YEAR ROUND indoor skating, check out the weekly schedule here for all the locations.

You might not even have to travel far to find an outdoor rink. Many Edmonton Community Leagues offer free skating with their yearly memberships. Lorelei – Beaumaris Community League have two well maintained ice surfaces again this winter so drop by for one of their skate times:

Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-9pm
Saturdays 1-6pm
Sundays 1-5pm

Follow their Facebook page for up to date ice conditions and closures. Skating is free with membership or $2 drop in for non-members.

Also, beginning in early January there is a Free Drop-in Learn To Skate Program offered by the City of Edmonton. Lorelei- Beaumaris will be hosting it Sunday mornings from 9am-12pm and it will run for 6 weeks. For more details and city wide schedule visit the City of Edmonton website.

So get out and skate this winter!  If you’re not from the Edmonton area, do you have ice skating near you? I’m definitely not an expert skater but it’s fun to get out and enjoy what winter has to offer!
